Home / Disability Insurance

Just as one can’t insure a burning house, the time for disability insurance is not when you need it, but before

You might be familiar with all the statistics

  • 1 in 8 Americans will become disabled for five years or more during their career
  • The average Disability Insurance claim lasts 34.8 months
  • The chances of disability increase with age 90% of disabilities are caused by illnesses not accidents
  • Only 1/3 of the people who apply for Social Security Disability is approved
  • The average payment from SSDI is right at the poverty level
  • Approximately 45% of bankruptcies are due to medically related work loss

Personally, I find sports statistics to more interesting, so let’s get personal. Ask yourself, How long could I go without a paycheck?

Unfortunately for most Americans, the statistical answer is less than 3 months, the real answer is probably less. We insure our cars, homes, recreational vehicles, and business, but forget to insure what is most important… ourselves and our paycheck. Your income is the foundation of your goals and aspirations.

Most common Denver Disability Insurance questions from our clients

I have disability insurance through an employer, is that enough?

First off, if your employer offers group disability insurance take my advantage of it. Group policies typically replace up to 60% of your gross income. That may not be enough to live on. Adding supplemental coverage should bring your coverage closer to 80%.

What is the difference between short-term and long-term disability insurance?

Short-term disability has a shorter waiting period to get paid (usually 14 days) and a shorter payout period (usually a maximum of 6 months). Long-term disability has a longer waiting period (typically 90 days) and offers a significantly longer payout period (several options up to age 70).

Are disability insurance payments taxable?

YES and NO. You will not pay income tax benefits from a disability policy where you paid the premiums with after-tax dollars. Conversely, you will pay taxes if the premiums were paid with pre-tax dollars.
